Not gonna lie, I’ve liked how the nier games now handle it. Its usually an immediate “screen glitch” followed by a darkening or loss of color.

Red is so annoying i just ignore it now, but it’s hard to not notice the tone shift and “glitch”. Which, I prefer, honestly.

And to add: Would you not think that the group of folks that “like to subvert expectation” would not also subvert the use of achievements to mess with you?
