I’m not sure that reasoning applies here. “No true Scotsman” applies in cases where there’s wriggle room in the definition of what a “True Scotsman” is. The criteria to be a rape victim is to have been raped. If you have not been raped, but lie and say you have, you are not a rape victim. It’s pretty cut and dried.

I agree false rape accusations happen and that they are dreadful for the victims. My best friend’s son was falsely accused of statutory rape. I also have a lot of friends who have been sexually assaulted, and I’m also a woman. My anecdotes are as good as anyone’s. And I know a LOT more people who have been…

The son of my best friend was falsely accused of statutory rape. My cousin’s husband was truly accused of child abuse...by her daughter. A childhood friend’s grandfather and priest were truly accused of child abuse...by her.

In that case I would have access to evidence I do not in this case and I would base my decision on that evidence.

A small percentage of rape reports are false; most studies put it around 3-8%. Most rapists also lie about whether or not they raped someone. So there’s (generously) a 92% chance that the victim is telling the truth and this guy is a rapist. I feel those are good odds.
