Yes as a non-book reader I really wish there was like one place on the internet to discuss this show without book spoilers and there really isn’t. Missing the days when avc cared about that kind of thing and at the very least, discouraged book spoilers in the comments. But yeah, like you said, week to week this review

I loved that movie! Agreed that it is excellent and overlooked. The ending killed me, fantastic.

I teach high school and overheard a bunch of 16 year old bros talking about discovering Entourage, recently. I fear you may be right!

My mom’s family is very light skinned, there are a range of passing stories. My grandparents both passed at particular times to get particular jobs (my grandma worked as a shipyard welder during WWII, at a shipyard that was only hiring whites, for example) but lived Black most of the time, even waging civil rights

I think it’s meant to be a hint of a more serious problem under the surface. Like that kind of heinous consent violation, which everyone seemed to kind of expect from her, is your first clue. Didn’t 355 tell him not to trust that woman?

Yeah I said the same thing to my husband when I saw this. The cast turns over constantly and you frequently have episodes where people are off doing their own thing that has no bearing on the plot whatsoever. It’s already basically an anthology show.

Amazing. I remember staying up late to catch Duckman as a kid and you’re making me want to re-watch it!

I don’t know, I miss old avclub too but it wasn’t much better in this respect. Do you remember the really nuanced and enlightened discourse around Beth Ditto? As a Gossip fan, those were rough times around these parts.

Have you seen Rutherford Falls? I just started watching it, the main protagonist is an Indigenous woman trying to run a cultural center and it brings up some really good discussion of these points. I’d be curious to see what you think!

If you really like Guzman, I strongly recommend Perpetual Grace Ltd. Great show and Guzman is a main character, hilariously playing off Ben Kingsley quite a bit. It’s under-appreciated gold.

Racism has been extremely effective in dividing the US working class and making a large portion of poor people side with ruthless pirates against their own interests. This tweet thread about the history of pellagra in the US made me think about this recently:

I agree that I also thought Scooter was possibly alive. I don’t think he’s the type for a simpler life though, to me he seems like a gold digger through and through. Or at least a pragmatist -with a taste for finer things. Like, he can love Rita and still know he needs to survive off of rich old ladies.

Same! Was hoping it would be in Santa Monica as well but honestly, we have a ton of theaters. Plus, Eagle Rock is for sure the hipper, rapidly gentrifying neighborhood. Most young trendy people I know live east, like Highland Parkish, you can basically see the hip-gentrification wave moving east from Silverlake & Echo

Love them as a thruple, but the power imbalance does give me pause. Director and starlet is an old, gross, story.

Anyone else think of that episode of China IL where everyone fucks their clone?

Read like, 1 book or paper about race in Latin America, colorsim and/or what it means to be “white passing”, then revisit all of your comments here, I’m begging you. You got offended because you don’t really understand the concepts and terminology in the article (though you’re awfully arrogant in your insistence that

What is your race? I’m just wondering what authority you’re drawing on to tell us which terms are more offensive than others. Did you grow up having these terms thrown at you or did you just discover them and decide? You’re clueless and I’m ashamed of the internet for enabling you in this conversation.

Ooh your particular combination of ignorance + arrogance is infuriating. White Latinos, as in people who are both Latin American and “white” in the traditional sense, exist. You don’t seem to get that. Yes “white passing” is different, as many many people of color here have told you, it’s also not an insult to that

Have you ever watched Spanish language news shows? Telemundo and the like have long been criticized for only hiring the whitest of white anchors, and not presenting people with more African and Indigenous features. This has been discussed publicly for decades, objecting to only casting whiter Hispanic people is not a

Good God man, you are completely ignorant of how race works in Latin America and you are continuing to insist that you’re right about this. There are a lot of books and papers on this, and a lot of folks here who grew up in Latin American communities, telling you you are wrong. It’s amazing. And gross. White Latinos
