Thank you for your service :).

I find any discussion of Orange County politics that doesn’t mention that it was a collection of sundown towns with Klan activity for a long ass time, woefully incomplete. Not just conservatism, fascism has reigned in Orange County.

It’s very much a Jim Crow thing too. Under Jim Crow rules of etiquette Black people, no matter how old, were to be referred to by their first names with no honorific. While even a white child would be called “Mr.” by a Black person. It’s so clearly about racial hierarchy and loud ass dog-whistles.

I’ve been rewatching GoT and was genuinely surprised how strong the performances & writing were for seasons 1-4, because I’ve been so bored/outraged by the last few boring, incoherent seasons. I rolled my eyes pretty hard at it getting nominated for last season, that shit was really not good.

Your family’s experience is valid but it’s also way disproportionately represented in American media and especially the awards and acknowledgements for said media. I’ve never known ANYONE who lived in a giant apartment in NY but I sure have watched enough shows and movies about them and their social/cultural norms.

She also taught at Chicago State but before that she was either at Morris Brown or Clark Atlanta (sources say different things) - both HBCUs. My mom went to Clark, that’s why it caught my attention.

Good lord, read a (Black) history book. Enslaved Africans resisted slavery in every possible way from the moment they were captured. There are countless stories, countless. I’m begging you to read them (I can give you a list if you want). The profits from slavery generated wealth like the world had never seen before,

My guess would be: more headlines in the US. Celebrity weddings are a ton of publicity, just look at this article. I don’t think Priyanka’s ever headlined a dirt bag before, but I could be wrong. Plus I think there’s pressure for single women who are aging to marry, the public wants to see pretty ladies settle down

Beard. Look out for the standard 2 year contract.

I was actually a Poe fan way before I finally read House of Leaves and so I loved Haunted as a teenager before I even knew it was based on a book. I still think it’s funny that “5 1/2 Minute Hallway” was a totally relatable relationship metaphor for me before I knew there was an actual goddamn 5 1/2 minute hallway in

Yikes, in your last paragraph, you seem to be taking a stance in favor of “zero tolerance” policies in schools and against restorative justice programs, and I think that’s ill advised. This show presents really stupid funhouse mirror distortions of real political conflict in education, so please be careful about

I find Noah’s “Dangerous Minds” plotline really, really annoying. It’s such a shame that this was their shot at introducing people of color, it’s all so cliche. And the classroom scene starts right off with the “spicy latina” stereotype that I hate. Plus, Noah seems really bad at his job. I’m a teacher and I kept

Just want to point out that “what goes on between a man and his wife (woman) is his own private business” has been used to excuse and enable domestic violence for like hundreds of years. It’s a line of thinking that was explicitly fought in the battered women’s movement of the 1970s. Women must make a ruckus to expose

I think after the first two seasons there definitely a dip in quality, the Seargent Hatred focused eps were basically unwatchable to me but I enjoyed the last season a lot. I am cautiously optimistic.

I’m glad someone at Deadspin saved me from having to type a bunch of words about how wrong you are, here:

So season 1 I REALLY hated the Belter accent. But by the time dude did that “Beltaloda, where is your pride?!” speech by, was that season 2? I was all in. I bawled during that speech and I thought the Belter cover songs were a nice touch this episode. That accent really won me over, I think it’s the commitment of the

He’s with a white woman you like, therefore he can’t be racist? That is a terrible take. Plenty of “progressive” white people excuse racist bullshit all. the. time. See: like, a ton of the comments on this article.

You know I actually saw them (Christina Hendricks and Husband Whatisname) IRL in a supermarket once and I actually noticed him before her. I thought he was hot, then I saw who he was with and realized who he was. She was dressed way down though (it looked like they were running errands) and I tend to like nerds, so

Hey did you know Abe Lincoln used to sleep with his bodyguards when his wife was out of town?
