7. Totally agree that his role in the story is stupid- but the man they freed joined the Maroons in Jamaica, so no, he wouldn’t necessarily have been recaptured. The Maroons were escaped slaves who made war on the British, they had a complex society and at various points controlled large sections of the island of

So like, the dudes crying “censorship” in this comment section?

Good thing our education system now heavily features high-stakes testing of these same teens, putting insane pressure on them to perform in very stressful situations, then punishing them (and their teachers and schools) if they fail! Sorry, I’m a teacher and that’s all I could think about reading this research. I

My partner and I have been referring to NPR as “Fascists: what do they think? Do they think things? Let’s find out.” (a la Bojack).

Your thought experiment is stupid, rape apologist. It is not just “all adults making choices” when there are no negative consequences for men who chose not to buy what a stripper is selling- but there were serious professional consequences women who turned down Weinstein. Consent matters.

Excellent username + comment synergy.

Historical context matters too, it certainly matters more than “intent” (which is also nebulous - how would I truly know your intent? I don’t know you. I do know the history of that word) to me.

A heartwarming story to start the day!

At what point did I say that the author couldn’t/shouldn’t be happy? I simply commented on the idea of SELLING her work as “happy” (perhaps I should’ve said “sell Syliva Plath’s work” rather than “sell Sylvia Plath” but I thought my meaning would be understood. Apparently not), the bulk of it is NOT about happy days

It’s not the sexualization that makes this weird to me, it’s trying to sell Sylvia Plath as happy. When I was at a point in my life where I devoured Sylvia Plath books and poetry (as a VERY unhappy and awkward teenaged girl) I would’ve thrown anything with that picture on it across the room. I wouldn’t have touched

Rodents of Unusual Size? I don’t think they exist.

Yeah, I feel like by admitting that he draws the line at gas chamber jokes he is admitting that he believes that a line needs to be drawn - precisely where it affects him. To me this interview reads more like a guy expressing a lack of empathy, which I think underlies a lot of the anti-PC backlash in general.

She was always pretty consistently awful to other women.

I love trashy movies and nerd shit, so I’ve been a Cinefamily regular forever, but also glad I didn’t buy a membership. I’ve been side-eying Belove since I went to a Belladonna of Sadness screening, it’s a really beautiful movie but he was SO into it as a feminist statement, not acknowledging how exploitative it is as

If anyone's interested, Small Island by Andrea Levy is a really good book (that I think became a mini-series) about Jamaicans who served Britain in WWII, then experienced a great deal of racism in England after. It also covers the discrimination in the service, experienced by a POV character.

Check out the history of the Radical Republicans. There was absolutely a faction of white people in power at this time who did advocate giving freed slaves the land taken from Confederates: http://www.historynet.com/t…

What's wrong is that "avoiding temptation" for men means limiting opportunities for women. Deals get done at these meetings and the idea that there's a certain population that can't or shouldn't access them translates into real world job discrimination. I've certainly turned down meetings with guys who have a history

Me: Somebody's brother probably should've kicked Littlefinger's ass a long time ago.
Mr. Lionheart: Somebody's brother did.
Right!

"Get a room you two!"
"We're in a room!"
"Well then lose some weight!"
