There’s still heat.  There’s still fission products. They still create fairly distinct thermal and radiation signatures. 

Great points! I think one of the “dont’s” if you’re in an outside circle merits special attention; that is, minimize unsolicited advice and thinly-veiled critiques of pre-crisis decisions. “Why didn’t you have flood insurance?” is not going to help.
