As much as I loved “Guardians of the Galaxy” (I saw it 5 times in the movie theater and have watched it on blu-ray a bunch more times), it’s really not a brilliant movie. “Star Wars: A New Hope” deserves a place on the list more, for all the reasons you stated. GOTG is wildly entertaining, but that’s a different list.
Regarding “Inception,” I agree that it’s a brilliant movie and well worth seeing. But it’s a bit light on “science fiction” (as are a number of the movies on this list).
