Well, I now have the shortest hair I’ve had since 1985 (my husband actually said, “your hair looks very 80's now”), and I absolutely love it. I have arthritis, so not only does this look cute, it’s way easier for me to deal with.

Ummm...I respectfully disagree. Plenty of Black folks’ hair don’t lock naturally so they get hair pieces/weaves/extensions to mimic the look of ‘locks. There is nothing “offensive” about that. Nor is it “offensive" to wear your hair kinky or curly if your hair is naturally straight or wear your hair straight if your

Wearing cornrows isn’t appropriation. Renaming them and calling them the new in-trend is.

We borrow from each other’s cultures all the time especially in terms of music, food, and clothing. In my opinion, with something like non-sacred items it’s only appropriation if you lay claim to or receive credit for somehow inventing/discovering something without acknowledging the culture/people who originated it. A

Did you seriously just cite “Vikings” as a historical resource? That show is a hot mess as far as costuming and hairstyling goes. Not saying that the Norse didn’t braid your hair, I’m just saying that you shouldn’t look to *that show* as a source of any sort of history except it’s own. That’s like taking your historic

I don’t think it’s offensive to get cornrows, it’s offensive to pretend this is a new hairstyle instead of an old one originating in Africa.

There’s no need to feel embarrassed. Braided hair has been part of virtually every ethnicity at one time or another (watch “Vikings” if you don’t believe me). The issue at stake here is that the NY Post is implying that UFC fighters and the Kardashians invented braiding, not that it’s bad to braid your hair.

If I had to try, I would say it exactly like you did. It’s about the claiming, I think. No one can argue that the style came to be/lasts because it makes so much practical sense. I think with 10, like with this new craze, there’s that air of “Well we did it so it’s popular”

I don’t care about the “appropriation”. In the 70s, the mood was definitely “wear everything”. Nobody Black gave a shit when White people got perms and did Afros. It was all good.

is any case of a white person wearing corn rows appropriation? This kind of confuses me, with people apologizing for getting cornrows while on vacation. I get that it’s a black hairstyle, but it’s also super practical. My hair gets frizzy and hard to manage a lot of the time, and I enjoy braiding my hair in a variety

I want to smack anyone who made fun of your braids. I bet you looked adorable in preschool.

Jesus for real i remember getting made fun of my braids when i was little, its how i made my first friend in pre school :) she’s black and Im mexican and she came up to me and said WE HAVE THE SAME HAIR!!!!! :) so fuck the kardashians I've been rocking braids since 1996

All braids? I don’t think any culture owns the general concept of braiding hair.

I love Yvette Nicole Brown’s response to this “trend” so I’ll just leave this here
