I agree, Tolkien was an educated man, and by the research works from his son (and the Cambridge papers from Tolkien published) The idea of the ring has his birth elsewhere, also the design??? The design has a Icelandic origin not English

I do not think that Tolkien would’ve mistaken a close resemblance with the ring of the Nibulingen and the Roman ring, once again originates in Nordic and/or Icelandic myth.
