Because internal competition. You know, in the 50's and the 60's, there was not much import car in america. There was a few European but not much asian company. So each division needed to be different from each other if they wanted to have a part of the market.

Chevy, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac all had their separate V8.
