Look at all these boulders at the foot of the falls - I’m surprised that Disney hasn’t hauled them off (on the US side, of course), to make the falls higher, bigger, betterer.
What ... is that? And how is it done? And why? Is that a thing?
You’re not running very deep, aren’t you?
The obvious solution to this is to run the Hyperloop from Wichita, KS, to Bismarck, ND, instead.
about a good 10 meters. There’s turquoise ice around you, a dark void beneath you, and from the top (where the rope cut into the snow) it’s snowing down into your neck. And if the guys on the surface are up to mischief, they give the rope some slack once in a while...
Don’t get all worked up, otherwise you’ll walk out of here with your head under your arm!
It’s not illogical - ice crevasses are dangerous and scary. For rescue training we had to let ourselves fall into a glacier crevasse (secured by ropes, of course), and be pulled out again by the other team members. The horror, oh the horror...

And see, here’s the difference between science and religion - one is built on theories which are tools to check whether observations can be explained through the laws of physics, the other is a system of beliefs that cannot be objectively asserted nor refuted, but can inform us in different ways about the human…
Agreed - they’re just trying to make you come up to the lab, and see what’s on the slab...
The philanthropy thing came later, and is different. I was talking about the ‘automate everything’ hype that he propagated earlier back then.
‘Of course’ because, from my observations, rarely something fundamental comes out from the ‘I’ve got a shiny new technology - what can I do with my new toy’ approach. The things I’ve described (automatic lighting/music etc) were not really innovative - PCs with sufficient power were affordable by then, and yeah, you…
Of course no news! Gates’ ‘vision’ never extended beyond completely wiring up and computerizing his house, so that lights would go on when he entered a room, and the ‘right’ music would play etc. Just the same now with Zuck - just adding a buzzword that has become fashionable again.
I’d like to see you contest your employer’s code of conduct when you do something that’s outside of that code and get dinged...
