I just turned Windows Update off.

Hit Win + R and run services.msc , find the Windows Update service and set it to disabled. Repeat and re-enable every now and again when/if you want to run updates. But if you’re too out of date, it might take a few runs to get current (and some updates rely on others, so you have to install them in sequence).
