EV batteries are composed of scarce, expensive materials. Hybrids and PHEVs use much smaller versions of those same batteries. The materials used to make a typical 75kWh EV battery could have been used to make roughly 50 hybrid batteries or 5 PHEV batteries. The battery in a single Hummer EV could have made 133

“The automotive press, including myself, should be eating humble pie over this. I’ve written about Toyota’s strange trepidation around pure-electric vehicles many times before around these parts. It just always seemed odd to me that the company responsible for endearing hybrids to the public has seemingly lagged

Good catch. He put it up for auction again, and the current bid is $14,005. You’re getting absolutely boned if you pay $20,000. I don’t know what this trucklet is really worth, but it ain’t $20,000.

Looks like a cool, slow, fun way to die in a frontal collision.

As someone else mentioned, this isn’t displacing a Chevy Bolt purchase; this is displacing a gas guzzler.   This is a win by all accounts.

That article was awful. Adam Ismail has the worst fucking takes I’ve ever seen. That was especially egregious because he made no effort at doing any research before posting it. The Maverick gets better mileage than the majority of actual compact cars, particularly the two it ostensibly replaced(Focus and Fiesta),

I get the hate on this thing cause it is peak excess american stupid but their take on the Maverick was utterly pathetic and lame as fuck.

At lest we had plenty of coverage on a trucker convoy that nobody gave a shit about.

Big EV bad. Small, compact, 4-cylinder hybrid city truck bad.

The article where they went after the Maverick a couple weeks ago was literally jaw-dropping.

The Jalopnik Snark knows no limits.  Even if it means they have to go against the very things they hold dear, they will find a way to be negative about everything.

“I loathe both, but I love to discuss them”

Every vehicle on sale should be tailored to me: a young, broke, urban, liberal

Jalopnik: We hate people with money, cars, trucks and EVs But we love brown stickshift wagons, reposting 7 year old posts and slideshows.

While I’ll certainly agree that “personal luxury” cars of the ’70s are an, ahem, acquired taste, This is actually a pretty fine example of the breed. A big, floaty cruiser made to soak up the miles. It may not be equipped for broken-field running, but it’s equipped perfectly for broken-road cruising.

You either “get” cars like this or you don’t. I was around back when these were new and I thought they were absurd. I still think they’re absurd but they represent an era of American automotive history that ought to be preserved. As long as it needs nothing more than the listed issues it’s well worth the price.

Sure, why not. It’s fantasy money I’m spending and I’d rather have one of these (love that blue leather!) survivors than two of that crummy pickup from yesterday. At least this one looks good, runs and would be an easy weekend car show driver.

I just now realised why you’re called Mercedes:

I look forward to one of these being built in Portland so it can become a place for junkies to OD in the restroom.

That customer lounge could use some serious bollards surrounding it.
