I think there must be confusion between what constitutes U.S. Soccer and what constitutes MLS. With SUM’s involvement, it does seem to get muddled at times.

It happens quite a bit with South American players. Brazil’s Neymar is the most recent off the top of my head. There was a long saga with Argentina’s Tevez and Mascherano years ago with their move to West Ham I think.
