I think it's actually a two-way street — I think it's in a later episode (so VERY MINOR SPOILER, SORTA) but Quark mentions that there were lots of more profitable business avenues he could have pursued, but his "weakness" is that he's a people person and wanted run something like the bar.

@avclub-0ae7484a9f3bbd2a21df420050c032ae:disqus I agree, but unfortunately the show struggles with it a lot — which is fair I guess because, let's face it, this isn't an economics textbook and wouldn't be a good show if it was, and a world with Trek technology is the sort of thought experiment a team of top economists

I actually kind of liked how DS9 brings in lesser-known civilizations, even if they can't dedicate much time to establishing them. Obviously they put more effort into another species later that I won't spoil since viewers know who I'm talking about.

Can't wait to see your thoughts on it. It has what I think is one of the best constructed twist-reveal scenes I've ever seen on TV. I shan't say any more :)
