Yep. That reveal was teased out for a reason. It reframes his entire ethos as almost an overcompensation. He became a good guy by overcoming that childhood programming, and his squeaky clean blandness is almost by design to blend in as he’s been in hiding. It’s maybe a generous read, but I think the film earned it.

I think one issue with Poe is that he was demoted for damage he didn’t cause, as the only order he disobeyed was to stop trying to hit a prerequisite for stage 2 of the plan. He hit that prerequisite, so the only blame for the losses from stage 2 should go to the idiot who approved the plan in the first place.
