Yes. But broken clocks.
Yes. But broken clocks.
There is no way she’s wearing that thing. Not classy. Sad!
Good god this was horrifying to read! Honestly, I’m really bummed Amy Schumer would be ok with employing someone like this who CLEARLY hates women. Not only advocating violence against them but admitting to being violent himself? How do you ignore that and say, “Sure you can write some jokes for my show!”?! :(
The evidence doesn’t support that hypothesis. Crime rates dropped to about the same degree in Canada and Mexico, too; they didn’t change their sentencing practices or see the sharp increase in prison population the USA did.
So private prison corporations can make money
So, let me get this straight. 80% of women in jail are being held for non-violent offenses, and 60% of women in jail are legally innocent.
Why do we imprison non-violent offenders? To scare them straight, right? Or to pour funds into police departments and corporate prisons?
I’m wondering how much of this is can be somewhat explained by the evolution of the role of women in our society- more autonomous and independent- and maybe also seen as capable of committing crimes?
Did you miss the part where the vast majority (80%) are non-violent? The private prison inductry is a sham.
Actually, Orange is the New Black makes prison look like Sesame Street compared to how prison actually is. The prison in Orange is far more interesting, the inmates nicer, and the guards far friendlier than the reality.
As the level of repression in women’s prisons increases, and, paradoxically, as the influence of domestic prison regimes recedes, sexual abuse-which, like domestic violence, is yet another dimension of the privatized punishment of women-has become an institutionalized component of punishment behind prison walls.…
I read that years ago and have thought of it a million times since. The quiet, brave solidarity of the men’s team with these starving, braver-still women... just wow.
They don’t; Aly Raisman has demonstrated that proper coaching can help a gymnast relearn how to compete after the sudden growth spurt of puberty. The Karolis had a particular notion that gymnasts were only worth the trouble to coach while they are slim and young and perpetuated the notion because they were the…
Gymnasts who trained under the Karolyis (I believe some of the magnificent 7) have said that they were limited to 800 calories a day, which is even scarier when you think how much they had to be burning. They said that the men’s gymnastics team would sneak them food at the olympics. Can't wait until Marta is gone.
She has a crazy story. Her dad sounds like he was The Worst... he forced his wife to give up their disabled daughter at birth and allegedly squandered all of Dominique’s gymnastics earnings, causing her to emancipate herself at 17. Olympics or not it honestly sounds like the other Moceanu sister had a better childhood.
I heard a horrifying interview with Moceanu recently on NPR where she was talking about her father beating her for not performing well enough or for gaining weight, and one particular incident where he found twizzlers in her room and slapped her across the face in front of the Karolyis, who apparently did nothing.…
The age minima that were put in place starting in either 2004 or 2008 (can’t remember which) were targeted specifically at China. Even the notoriously brutal Soviet/Russian training system (in athletics, they’re one and the same—flag changed, nothing else did) recognized that you just can’t do certain things to…
I read her memoir a couple of years ago and it definitely didn’t paint the Karolyis or her parents in a good light.
