It's quite interesting to see how a term can evolve in such a short time. Ten years drone was almost exclusively used to describe a mindless follower, like an ant drone or a Borg drone. Now it's starting to refer to every sort of surveillance robot.

From what I've seen of Mars missions is that they still use the old hardware. The stuff is often custom built so it's hard to get compatibility with newer stuff. There's probably a Voyager 1 room somewhere at one of the NASA facilities.
