How can you say it was nearby, there is absolutely no evidence of that. They crashed in the tie fighter from orbit, and even still Fin had to walk for what seemed like hours before seeing the outpost. It could just have easily been on the other side of the planet.
I’m half assuming that he’s a sleeper agent for the First Order ever since his torture by Kylo Ren. But if he’s not and lived through the trilogy, that’s good too. Let’s hope that he’ll have more to do and get his own character progression in the next sequels.
