Being that they had a fairly successful run as a tv variety show after that, they may have just packed it in in by the 80s.

Well, since they were a throwback group (albeit good at their task) from an earlier rock era, and the proposed lineup has some of the original Woodstock performers (where ya been, Country Joe?), it seems that box is checked.
