From what I learned from my folks, for most of the ‘fighting age’ men there was a greater fear of being found 4F and having to work for the defense industry. Even the actually physically unfit were somehow perceived as slackers and cowards.

War surplus stores were everywhere when I was a kid in L.A. Mostly clothing and ‘camping’ equipment, though I imagine there were stores or outlets with a more ‘machinery’ bent. The last one I remember operating (and still may - I’m 3500 mi away these days) was ‘The Supply Sergeant’ on Hollywood Blvd.

They’re geared to the motorhome/trailer set. The model is ‘neighborhood’ (I think tailgating is the same mindset); while REAL camping is as solitary as possible

My curly haired nephew reported the same thing about the PRC

That’s still too small a sample. If anything, Los Angeleans are quite diverse - entire blocks/neighborhoods can be fairly homogenous and abut a completely different block/neighborhood. Plus, these too can change over time.

Oh, Lordy!!
