Watched it twice yesterday, and still came out with mixed feelings both times. I feel like some of the praise the movie’s got so far were very slightly over the top, but that’s not to say the movie was good.

You’re so credits you don’t even know
“Canto Bight, baby! Canto Bright!”
I feel it’s very relevant to this article that one should be wary about how Feige’s McMovie approach to filmmaking have been a playground to libertarian capitalists, ‘benevolent’ fascists, and centrist politics that could ruin the delicate issue of making a movie about politics in a black society.
So you wish they went with the design of a westernized capitalist safe-haven catering to wealthy Europeans instead of a futuristic isolationist black enclave?
You should have left him in the grays. :(
(psst, that’s because Hollywood doesn’t cast enough people who aren’t white to build a pool of marketable non-white stars.)
I wondered how long it would take someone to say something incredibly stupid that shows a total lack of awareness. Congrats, it didn’t take you long at all.
...which is a crap argument. People aren’t exposed to minority actors, so of COURSE they’re not “excited” by them. They’ve never seen any. Chicken or the egg, and at some point people need to realize the right to do is lay the frickin’ egg...ie, cast non-white actors and go with it.
“I literally can’t think of any Asian actresses...”
Yes, that’s exactly the problem with whitewashing. Movie audiences don’t get the exposure to Asian actresses and thus, don’t know who they are, which perpetuates the very point you are making, which is that the white actress is more famous and will get more attention…
What? Portman is a decent star, but it’s not like anyone is seeing this because of her. And if you can’t think of any Asian actresses that speaks to two things: your own ignorance specifically and Hollywood’s ongoing racial issues in general.
And Dubai is super opulence created out of nothing in the last few decades. Wakanda is supposed to be an uninterrupted civilization going back thousands of years, so their cities are a mix of old and new. And who’s to criticize how they dress? Besides being free of outside influence, it’s not like a 1915 Brooklyn…
Yes. That is exactly why. When playing field has been slanted 90/10 in your favor, 80/20 seem horribly, horribly unfair to you.
That’s a big reach to make a non-point. It’s a quick joke she makes at Black Panther’s recent habit of bringing injured outsiders in. And the magic she uses is technology.
Kind of ironic that in America we all think of the riches of Dubai, but the reason they made themselves the Middle Eastern Playground for the super rich is because they dont have much oil like the rest of the UAE. They are actually the poorest of the Emirates. After the market crash in 2008 Abu Dhabi actually had to…
I also like to make bad faith assumptions on the internet.
“ ...instead of this hyperfuturistic African society where people still dress like a Zulu-esque society while carrying laser weapons.”
You clearly lacking in moral instruction from some source.
That very good analysis. Me think Star Wars have similar problem, but with legitimate non-canon side stories. There were dozens of novels dealing with further adventures of Luke/Han/Leia (spoiler: in nearly every single one, new evil rises that had been conveniently sidelined during previous adventures, and then our…
As me already pointed out in previous comment, there enormous difference between having lot of historically over-represented people (white guys!) on show, and having lot of historically under-represented people on show. In fact, those pretty much opposite things from each other.
