The 96-2003 1.9TDI is pretty bullet proof here too. After that there was a dark age of diesel in america. They only had the PD versions certified in america and those were so crappy. VWs got issues yes. Most i find are user error, and not following some of the specific maintenance issues. There are some abbysmal TDI engines. Like most from 2004-2006 the pumpe duse engines. Run from those fucking things. Fast.
