I can’t imagine Taxi Driver, Fight Club or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang without the voiceover.

Stand By Me and A Christmas Story both come to mind.

most of them as redundant as Klingon anatomy.’

I’m a little confused why they didn’t hire a real dog for the scenes where he interacts with people and then make a CGI dog for the scenes where he doesn’t. You don’t really need a CGI dog for the whole movie - it’s not like he’s Gollum.

They had a really cool opportunity to go into the Yukon with a real dog and do a very good realistic version of this story but instead Disney chose the more expensive, soulless option

Maybe someone from the industry can chime in, but I can’t shake the feeling that these pics that fall into the Uncanny Valley do so in many ways because the crew is working on desktop computer screens and never gets to see “dailies” ie footage blown up movie screen size - until it’s too late. So maybe the look works

I'M NOT ARGUING THAT WITH YOU!

I’m not arguing that with you.  I know he can get the job but can he keep the job?  I’m not arguing that with you.  I know he can get the job but..................

Just chiming in to say that this is an extremely thoughtful, well-written piece. Even having not watched the movie since I was...what, 11?...I found it a total joy to follow along.

For some reason Dan Hedaya stands out for me in my memory of Joe more than the other three combined.

Kids today just don’t know what online life was like back in the 90s. I can still hear the dialup now..

“Could you fall in love with a Republican?” I’d sure love to see them try today.

does romance get really boring after 30? asking cuz i’m like 29

Michael Palin (aka the best Monty Python member) had a role in this film and then they completely removed his character in post-production. Boo, hiss etc

Joe versus the Volcano’ was the ultimate Hanks/Ryan/Abe Vigoda movie.

Emails was the main correspondence between these two characters, so absolutely that was a likely email. I used email extensively with my future wife at the time while we were dating, and we wrote long emails to each other similar to this. (we had some restrictions on how and when we could communicate because of her

I think you’re conflating greater internet culture with email. At that time, AOL Instant Messenger and bulletin boards/chatrooms/forums were more like you say but those were more used by millennials and Gen-Xers (then in their tweens to late 20's) and people more deeply invested in the Web. For people in their mid-30s

It’s a great movie about how marriage/men are inevitably the death of a woman’s career.

“... seeing Hanks and Ryan reunited again after Sleepless and Joe Versus The Volcano...”

I’ve been left wondering the same thing, all this talk of Romulans but no mention of their help in the Dominion war or of the war itself at all. Really hope they aren’t wiping away the DS9 era!
