Social commentary is fine if done well. But in this film it was incredibly unsubtle and not particularly clever. The entire premise and the devices he used were so hamfisted it was hard to appreciate it as anything but (as you say) an unremarkable thriller. I can't understand why everyone is losing their shit over

Spot on. All of the above. I'm surprised those points haven't been more widely raised.

This recently opened in Australia and I was disappointed to find it absurdly overpraised. Where did the opening scene fit into the narrative? Did I miss the connection or did Peele not make it?
