it sucked as an episode.

It was a solid “meh” out of ten for me. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t all that entertaining for a Christmas Special. The lack of any central Christmas type theme didn’t really help.

I’ll deal with it by not watching. Matt Lucas sealed that deal. I’m out for now.

Was it Kill The Moon that did it? That episode killed the show for me.

That’s a good point, though I’d bet that Doctor Who costs a lot more to make than any of the other shows.

Why are people struggling so much with such a simple article? I’m calling it low because it’s about in the range of the lowest figures they’ve ever gotten for a Christmas special. It’s not being compared to other shows, it’s being compared to its own historical performance.

I stopped watching after Capaldi’s first season...which was terrible. So excuse me for giving this show, which I used to love, another chance. Moffat is the worst and it was only Matt Smith that made his time running Doctor Who even bearable.

Here’s the key thing about Steven Moffat:

How interesting. Here’s an article from a site that doesn’t copy its news stories from press releases:

If 1.7M is the best BBC America can expect, they’re on their way out. I looked around a bit more and it’s the best for THIS YEAR. Makes sense. Ratings are dropping like a stone for broadcast and basic cable.

Meh, didn’t watch it. Didn’t bother to DVR it and honestly haven’t been bothered to track it down on demand. Who hasn’t felt “fun” to me in a couple of years. I blame Moffatt’s direction and writing more than anything else.

It also might be the last Christmas special helmed by showrunner Steven Moffat

I was bored with it. Thought it might get better with every minute...minutes I can’t get back...

Steven Moffat can’t get the fuck out of here soon enough.

There was a complete lack of momentum. It’s hard to sustain any enthusiasm in a show that has one episode a year.

I’ve loved Doctor Who since the 80's and I’ve never liked the crummy effects. So no on that one. That’s just Doctor Who fans trying to excuse the c*** parts of the show.

But it seemed like something that would be fun and play well with big family audiences, so I’m surprised it did so poorly with Brits.

This special was on the lower end of the Christmas episodes for me; I found the love story to be incredibly artificial, and the story never explains WHY it’s so important for Grant to hide his secret identity from Lucy (and sure enough, once the secret’s out, there are no negative consequences.) Add in some boring

It’s increasingly unpopular in the UK as it’s no longer a British show, not really. Increasingly it’s become yet another americanised glossy Sci-Fi half-hour, with most of the charm that made it so good (the slightly crummy effects and set, the sheer Britishness of the characters, and the references to British life)

The Xmas special may have worked as commentary on superhero mythology, but it really didn’t work as a Doctor Who episode.
