I refuse to believe it was a real thing. No real culture would actually produce such a thing. This is just bad worldbuilding.

I like Pratchett's deep sharp wit light years better than the drugging through a tar pit word play humor of Piers Anthony's Xanth. Also Pratchett's ladies "in waiting" are of a proper marrying age.

Now playing

A bit of a sidebar, but if there are any hardcore Pratchett fans out there who have yet to see the 1951 Ealing classic The Man In the White Suit, do yourself a favor, and track down a copy today. It was one of those movies that kept cropping up in articles and on various authors' favorites lists, but until I watched

Five moves and my Pratchett collection makes the cut every time.

Terry Pratchett has probably influenced my world view and humour more than any other writer, or any other artist, really. I still remember that my parents came up to my room when I was rocking with laughter on my bed as a teenager, with no TV in the room. A teenager, who had barely ever shown an interest in books.

This is why io9 is an excellent place to visit.

TEENAGE BOY LEARNS XHOSA TO PICK UP CLICKS.

That makes me wish I had taken the time to learn more languages. Linguistics are really interesting because the words available to you really do influence how you conceptualise things and understand the world, there are so many things without a direct translation into English.

"Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3? Pffft! We've already cast our new Batman. We're gonna have Gotham, then a YA series called World's Youngest Detective, then the Rise of the Batman stories of Bruce Wayne's training years abroad, and then the new Batman movies — all with the same actor! And everything DC will branch off of

What, he couldn't steal a fish? THE GUY WAS FISHING! HE'S THE PENGUIN! EAT A FISH!

And of course, this being Penguin…it was probably tuna.

I will never, ever understand this criticism of the Nolan films as humorless. Alfred alone is full of jokes.

He stole... a SANDWICH!

I was just amused with the musical swell that came with Penguin stealing the sandwich and hate-eating it, and not on the murder he committed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pilot episode, and it's drop dead obvious that the show is gonna produce multiple GIF worthy moments on a weekly basis. I'm intrigued to see how the visual style evolves over time. Great potential overall. Big props to Bruno Heller et al.

You know what would end up being really cool?
