After 1or 2 Goosebumps books, I determined they were too tame for me, and moved up to R.L. Stine's youg adult "fear street" series. I'm surprised more people don't mention them, I remember they built a pretty rich mythology, with a psuedo gothic back story, and they were simultaneously more graphic and more believable.
