Don Henley's "The Heart of the Matter"—the final chorus always gets me:
I've been trying to get down
To the heart of the matter
Because the flesh will get weak
And the ashes will scatter
So I'm thinking about
Forgiveness, forgiveness,
Even if, even if
You don't love me.

This isn't in the "terrifying" category, but it's X-Files related; I really liked how they used the Platters' "Twilight Time" in "Kill Switch." And Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" in the episode with the same title.

What's interesting is that British comedies often get "translated" into very successful U.S. comedies (The Office, TTOI-Veep; heck, even Three's Company). But I can't think of an American comedy that's been successfully "translated" into an acclaimed British version.
And, on a side-note—I just want to put in a quick

Totally agree—Piper was ADORABLE!

Aww, I just saw this and really enjoyed it. Ed O'Neill is truly the star here, and I loved all the clever ways the animators incorporated an octopus' intelligence, flexibility, and shape-shifting. The climactic action-sequence had me laughing out loud, it was so absurd and delightful. To me, the most important

So glad this show's back! While all of the acting is fantastic, I find the servants way more entertaining than the Bellacourts. Peepers, Blanche, Chair, and Flobelle are all awesome—but I think I like Garfield most of all.

Yes, Porpoise Song is gorgeous. And it was used very well at the end of a Mad Men episode a few years back.
