Don’t think it was started by incels. See it primarily via tons of jokes on Instagram meme accounts. It seems to be a thing mostly as a recurring joke, not something people actually do and take seriously.

Well that but also there’s no room in the movies’ story for them to have this plot. Not being connected to the MCU gives them a lot more leeway in backstory and where things can go.
