Yep. Know someone like this. Always has a tumor, a pregnancy, an Ebola...never ends. So scared of getting sick that all of this person's life is consumed by wondering about being sick and imagining it.
Yes - she is an adult and no longer on psychiatric hold. Why is she not capable of consent?
Why?
I think it's odd that there is no mention here of a heartbeat. Or, rather, the lack of one, which can be detected as early as six weeks and is distinctly heard during a sonogram. Surely, one of the many medical professionals pointed this out to her? Anna, did you ask her about this?
She sought out journalists to do this story on her own volition. She voluntarily engaged the author in numerous interviews and text/email exchanges. That's fairly obvious consent, at least to me as a layperson on the topic.
I know but I'd still like to know what happens when 9+ months rolls around and no bebe, y'know.
The motivation is that it is interesting. I've never heard of this type of syndrome, and I'd wager that most of Jezebel's audience is in that same boat.
The problem is that the way in which she "gets really, really into her research" is apparently to stick to the dark corners of the internet full of hypochondriacs who don't trust mainstream medical science. It's an echo chamber where otherwise normal people can end up anti-GMO, anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists.
Spoiler alert: She's not pregnant.
Years ago, when I was in college and working at a walk-in crisis center, a woman came in saying she'd only just realized she wasn't pregnant, 7 months into a pregnancy. She said she'd learned that she had been pregnant, miscarried, and her brain didn't process the miscarriage. She'd continued to go to the doctor…
The unfortunate problem is there's virtually no way 20 medical professionals are incorrect, where as she feels "When I research something, I get really, really into it." is a justifiable medical license to diagnose yourself.
As someone in mental health I do sort of feel for the ultrasound tech. While normally an argumentative patient does not warrant that person being committed, we don't know the details of how Ruby acted. That said, these "phantom" pregnancies occur and dealing with them is akin to dealing with other conditions such as…
Wacka Flocka Flame's cough drop ad has nothing on Snopp Dogg's long, trippy Hot Pockets ad, featuring Kate Upton and "flavor fantastical herbs" getting "baked" heh heh.
No-one in Britain understands Pippa Middleton either, although her ridiculous party book is routinely mocked.
I didn't think it was possible to get bored of something so expensive, but I must say I'm a bit truffled out, and my flat now smells of truffles. That's what people call a first world problem, I know.
I always wonder if they went through the program line-by-line with these people whether they would still object? Is it that you do not want your kid to know that "Do you want to come back to my place" is not sufficient consent for sex? Is it that you don't want your kids to know that sex can lead to pregnancy and/or…
True story: when I was in high school, the kids from Acalanes high were the sluttiest. Like "go to Catholic confirmation camp and blow a dude" slutty. Assuming nothing has changed, these are the kids who need the education the most.
It is a great, unanswered mystery.
WHY CAN NOBODY ON CRAIGSLIST SPELL "COCOA" RIGHT?
