I’m not foolish enough to think that we live in a universe that leans towards to being morally just, but I wish it were at least morally neutral. That’s two awesome musicians the coronavirus has gotten in two days. I hope this is balanced out by it taking out two asshole politicians in the next couple days. Is that

Agreed. Marriages are tricky things. There is no marriage where both parties are going to be 100% satisfied with everything, but generally, we think that if you’re, say, 80%-90% satisfied, that’s a good marriage. It seems silly to blow up a 90% satisfying relationship over the 10% you find unsatisfying.

Hello, Dean. You are a stupidhead.

Yeah, I haven’t re-watched Breaking Bad, because I don’t want to find out I’m wrong, but when that ended, I felt like that show never had a bad episode and was as close to the perfect execution of what it was striving for from start to finish as a show could get.

Count me as another who loved The Deuce, but puts it below The Wire. I feel like The Deuce wasn’t as expansive as The Wire, probably because it only had 3 seasons, and they were doing the time jump thing in between to cover more temporal distance rather than branching out into as many other aspects of the current

I’m kind of hoping for some twist like that and dreading it. I think it’s a little too straightforward and played out to rehash the basic Terminator plot of a good robot being brought in to fight a bad robot out to destroy the human race. But as others have said, it’s hard to pull off a simulation within a simulation

That was my reaction to ET as well. I guess I must have been 4 when it came out, but I was already a hardcore Star Wars fan (whatever that means for a 4-year-old), and I was thinking ET was also about aliens, spaceships, etc., in the same way Star Wars was. I remember just being bored and disappointed. I don’t think

Whenever I see some idiot talking about “Marshall Law,” I conclude that people are worried that Jason Segel is secretly plotting a coup to take over the government and install himself as dictator...which I wouldn’t entirely oppose.

I’ve been saying this for years.

My reading of Dolores is that she is one of those revolutionary figures who starts out with a legit grievance against an oppressive regime, but in the course of the fighting, becomes just as bad as the regime they’re trying to replace. I think the real protagonist is Maeve. She’s the one who seems to have the chance

Yeah, I posted about my dislike for season 2 of Altered Carbon in the pre-air review thread. I haven’t read the books, so that’s not the source of gripes. I just felt like they foregrounded the Takeshi/Quell relationship stuff, which was boring, and pushed all the more interesting world-building, political issues, and

I’ve just been catching up on the current season of Better Call Saul and had forgotten how good the craftsmanship is from the Gilligan crew. After a couple months of watching good at best, but definitely not great shows (Narcos, The Outsider, Altered Carbon, etc.), all the technical work on BCS really stood out.

So who knows if anyone will read this, but I figured this was the best place to share my thoughts after having finished this 2nd season. I remember thinking the 1st season had some clunky dialogue, acting, and plotting, but I liked it overall for its world-building and the political and philosophical questions brought

I’ll watch the 2nd season regardless, but I am a little disappointed about the direction they seem to be taking as indicated in this interview. I thought the best part of the show was the world it created and the philosophical and political questions raised by that world. I don’t care that much about Kovacs’ personal

And honestly, while I appreciate the professional reviewers on here, I’ve gotten at least as much enjoyment and insight from the thoughts posted in the comments. If they could even just open up a discussion space with no formal review for each episode of a show like this, that would be most appreciated.

I finally saw the film last week, and I’m not sure how a show would work. They could milk the “destitute family conning their way into jobs with a wealthy family” thing for quite a while, but I don’t see how they can include the stuff after and including the “twist.” It feels like it would be hard/impossible to

Yeah, and I forget the exact line from Ms. Kim, but she even said something like, “The Parks are nice, but it’s easy to be nice when you’re rich. If I were rich, I’d be nice too.” The clear implication is that when you struggling to keep your head above water (literally as the case may be), you don’t the luxury of

I don’t have any good, but I sympathize as a faculty member who has been the advisor for various student groups. My approach has been pretty hands off so as to let students figure out to run things and solve problems for themselves, and because I don’t want/can’t have the huge time suck of sorting out a dysfunctional

Since nobody else has said it yet, I liked season 3 of True Detective pretty well. It wasn’t as good as season 1, but it was much better than season 2. All of the main cast (Ali, Dorff, McNairy, Ejogo) gave great performances, and I liked the exploration of memory loss and the idea that it’s like coming unmoored in

I could see people getting bogged down in some of the initial stuff about the prep for the voyage and not making it past that to the good stuff, but yeah, I’d say Moby Dick is my favorite American novel.
