They showed you the Today sponge but did they explain the Elaine Benes theory of sponge-worthiness?
I just actually checked my body for a diamond shape near my nipples.
Yeah I worked in a Catholic school (a really progressive one, to be fair) that had the best sex ed program I’ve ever seen! They did have the chaplain on hand to periodically be like, “The Church would prefer that you not have sex until marriage,” but it was always couched like that - “the Church would prefer,” rather…
I’m not sure it’s an all girls issue. I’ve been to both an all girls (boarding no less) school and to a Catholic co-ed school (which was considered a very liberal step in Catholic learning in the 90s) and frankly... there was more sex at the mixed school. A LOT more sex. It is, however, possible that it’s a Catholic…
Does anyone find the names Duggar and Smart ironic?
Yeah, I was worried about triggers myself. (Not a cult, in my case, just a garden-variety stepfather rapist, from when I was 9 till about 15.) I kind of trusted Tina Fey to hold my hand as we walked into the darkness together, and it was worth it. It’s really funny, but I have also found it moving and even healing at…
I also need to add that I have at least one friend who has chosen not to watch this show because it’s such a huge trigger for her. I discussed various aspects of the show with her after I watched it and she decided that it would be best for her not to watch. Fortunately the show is pretty upfront with its triggers so…
I love that the show quietly addressed the PTSD resulting from it. Elevated startle response? Check. Crazy nightmares where you’re suddenly transported back? Check. Flashbacks? Check. Random specific items causing you to freak out? Check. (But other than the last one, they’re really not played for laughs outright.)
It’s uses comedy to make really incisive commentary about rape culture, actually. I loved it.
It is bizarre, and yet....it works? I’m not surprised NBC et al passed on it, but the cast and comedy are solid and it never shies away from the fact that life CAN be shitty. Bad things can happen to people, and they survive. Somehow they keep the right balance - hopefully they can maintain it in season 2.
Unfortunately they had a lot of inspiration to pick from. Seems like the situation was inspired by Ariel Castro and Warren Jeffs (the insane preacher part), but Kimmy herself is like Elizabeth Smart.
Kimmy Schmidt restored my faith in black comedy. Toss those Family Guy rape jokes in the trash and bring back the real black comedies that make incisive observations about their subject matter!
Agreed. Part of what makes Smart so brave is her gentle but confident renunciation of the way she was brought up concerning the ideas of women’s meekness and dependency on men.
I wish the Duggar girls read her book and interviews, because their religion has made them feel shame and guilt of their own sexual abuse. I’m sure there is still this heavy load that they are carrying even after marriage.
I love how Elizabeth Smart advocates against sexual violence. I think it really great and supportive.
I love this show so much. I’ve already binge-watched like 4 times, and every time I find something funny that I hadn’t noticed before. I love the random, weird humor, and the overall message “Life is tough but so are we.”
Smart, is. We should all have such incredible grace under extreme circumstances.
Elizabeth Smart is a woman of unthinkable courage and strength. She has chosen the most noble path possible. Her activism for children who have been raped and sexually abused has no doubt saved countless lives and helped to begin the process of mending damaged souls. She is doing the single most important thing to end…
