Well... in actuallity 2+2=4(+/-1)... that is 2+2 can result in anything ranging from 3 to 5. The response of 4 is given based on the assumption a rounding error hasn't occurred. Like say extraordinarily high values of either 2 being added into each other.

The Yellow Arc of the Pokemon Adventures comic book kind of gives you an idea of how scary the world can get to be. It eventually is kind of made to look silly by the Emerald Arc... but FireRed/LeafGreen had it looking scary enough that the Emerald Arc was kind of required as a breather.
