I disagree. I don't think it's ridiculous at all. If the investigation had been handled properly he may never have received these accolades. Or he may have received them without such a stigma attached to him.

I have not seen or heard other interviews but I have read some quotes. Based on the hobbit one I watched it seems like he just has a very dry sense of humor and occasionally puts his foot in his both. But again I am going off of limited information.
