I have a secure app running on my Synology in my private network at home. Accessible over the internet as well... It’s called NoteStation and I have apps for mobile and browser. It had functional parity with Evernote for my needs.

Same for me exactly. I spend about 1-2 hours in the car every day. I tend to go through a lot of Audiobooks that way! And the bonus is that my commute it actually fun!

Web apps are not what they used to be 10 years ago... they work offline as well and can cache articles (and related pictures + web pages) for later offline reading.
