Uh, maybe let’s hold off on criticizing people until they are out of 5th grade? I’m sure your friends have gotten a lot of mileage out of the “I knew Neil Patrick Harris when he was 8" story but I don’t know that it really fits here.

I think they nod to how this particular case of sexual harassment is a product of the culture of academia. Same with my comment: I’m not suggesting that we ignore sexual harassment. More that we address all the exploitative practices that exist in the academy.
It galls me beyond words that the subject of this article (the offender, anyhow) is an English professor; I’ve known more than a few folks in my line of work who’ve crossed the student/professor divide, but every time I read about it, it irks me to no end.
It is incredibly sad just how weak some of the protections are…
Why would they? Where would that information come from in the first place?
The rotten core of all of this business is the fact that universities are no longer (if they ever were) altruistic hubs for advancing the human race. Growing up as the son of a professor, I spent a lot of time on campus, and even more time soaking up anecdotes around the dinner table. The trustees and administration…
Academia has so many skeletons in its closet it’s a wonder the closet hasn’t exploded. The whole system is set up to fundamentally exploit labor to an extent that’s mind boggling. Predatory sexual behavior is sadly but one of the many consequences, none of which are likely to be curbed anytime soon.
> which questioned if “erotic longing between professors and students” was “unavoidable.”
No. It’s not fucking unavoidable. I work in an office, about 50% women and 50% men, and everyone is 100% a colleague. Some folks are “work-friends” in which there’s mutual camaraderie and we get drinks and discuss life outside of…
Not to take anything away from the appalling behavior by the faculty in this article, but I would also like to bring up the types of abuse by faculty that continue to go unreported. These include outright career sabotage and inflicting emotional distress to the point where students (especially at high profile…
Thank you for writing this, it’s a wonderful and eye opening piece about a fucked up and under-reported issue.
I had just read yesterday in a piece about Seymor Hersh’s memoir that it was basically an open secret in the white house that Richard Nixon used to hit his wife when he had too much to drink, but that no journalists ever reported on it because it was seen as a ‘domestic issue’ that didn’t have anything to do with…
Seen uglier cars
The CW always casts parents who are about 10 years older than the actors playing their adult children. It’s fucking hilarious.
I can’t do gifs but 30 Rock did this so well “I’m 39 now. Time ... to die.”
#KillAllMen amirite XDDD
Not related, but that poor fucking girl was ultimately stabbed to death in public by her boyfriend. May she rest in peace, and may Morgan burn in fucking hell.
I’m old enough to remember the rumors that Morgan Freeman had an inappropriate sexual relationship with his step-grandkid, so I’m finding it hard to be surprised he is a creep.
No. The truth is that “civilization” is just a bunch of people who’ve agreed to fake it.
I think this interview will feel very familiar to any women that wants people to know what happened to them was not okay, but also feel pressured to go along to get along.
