It’d be cool but those generations didn’t intersect. The first had the diesel—very very briefly and the second had AWD.
In the late ‘90s, my buddy’s high school car was a 1990 Tempo, with no options-No A/C, no cruise, no power anything except the stupid mouse trap seat belts. Of our whole friend group, either he or I were the ones typically driving, so I spent a lot of time in one.
I need to hear somebody say “...and this, over here, is my Holy Grail Tempo...”. My life will be better, I am certain.
Drove them? I worked on them at a dealer when they were still under warranty. Easiest car you’ll ever replace a head gasket on. They were terrible cars, but most cars from that era were.
You probably weren’t supposed to be able to flip the seats forward without using the lever, but that’s Ford quality for you.
The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn might have beaten you to it.
Perfect for the “Boring Cars Nobody Gave or Will Ever Give a Shit About” Museum.
My dad had a low-mileage, fully-loaded Tempo diesel for a couple months in the mid-90s. He was already an aficionado of the Escort diesels, so when he found a Tempo (GLE, I believe was the trim designation), it was a big upgrade in terms of both space and creature comforts, but with a drivetrain he was very familiar…
I’ve driven a an AWD Topaz and also a 5-speed manual V6 Tempo Coupe for a while, they were fun because they were tough and worth nothing but I can’t say they were good cars.
Wow, that is a frighteningly clean example of a pretty shitty car from 30 years ago.
Also, Ford’s foray into painted rubber molding over steel wheels is just hilarious. I had an ‘87 Mustang with wheels done that way. The paint peeled and they looked like what they were.
Ford Made a Diesel Tempo also. Holy Grail would be Diesel and AWD but unlikely.
If I close my eyes I can still remember the engine vibrations coming through the steering wheel, the torque steer, and even the no-base sound coming through the stereo of my 1985 Ford Escort as it played De La Soul’s debut album. These era Fords were actually pretty good cars for the money, with much more…
When are we going to stop pretending that shitbox econo cars from the 80's are somehow loved and missed? The reason it only has 17k on it is because they are TERRIBLE FUCKING CARS and the original owner quickly realized it. 7k? There’s no way.
wow, I had no idea an AWD variant was available for the Tempo. and this thing is in great shape!
I went up to Canada this past summer from the US (first time in a long time). There, anytime I had my phone in hand or was fidgeting with my watch when it came time to pay, they’d all say “Tap to pay?”. It was great.
you are going to be really disappointed when you learn that skimmers (like a majority of cc fraud) are somehow connected to that business (often through a poorly paid, and disgruntled employee.)
I think the one you are referring to is the first-gen V-10 TDI Touareg. The later V6 TDIs were fine, except of course for that whole cheating thing.
NP, mostly because it will sell to someone who wants to be baller on a budget. They know what they are doing price wise.
Someone who doesn't realize how much upkeep this requires will buy it and it will be trashed in 18 months. NP though.
