The thing about this prequel is not knowing what this is a prequel to. I have baggage from the other series and movies. The JJ Abrams movies are a reimagining of the series, so much more liberty can be given to change whatever they like. It was a fresh start. I don’t know where Discovery fit in.

Yes indeed. Literally almost every story-logic or design problem in each episode of this series is caused by one thing - the fact that they insisted on this being a prequel. Personal I think everyone should take the written test every 5 years, and the full driving every 10 no matter your age. I retained more information from freshman economics than most people have from the driving test they took at 16.
