The way they controlled emissions was with low static compression and low ignition advance, and cam profiles to match. These are keys to efficiency. The government mandated things, and it took a while (15 years?) for the industry to catch up.

Yay, a 240Z! Having had several of these, I don’t think they actually had the interlock. Could be mistaken though, all had been through an owner or two before I got my hands on them.

Thanks for alerting me to this, was a long day and this post got my rage flowing. My point (aka what the fuck I’m talking about) is this - an important vehicle-handling skill, easily and objectively tested, is parallel parking. Prove that you can run the car front and back, and you get the key.
