It would be awesome if those rumors are true about Mulgrew and Ryan playing the relationship gay as an FU to the cowardly decision-makers. Doesn’t seem to jive with the other rumors about how the two actresses didn’t get along, but I get the feeling that bit of lore has been overstated.
Pretty sure I’ve read in more than one place that Jonathan Frakes lobbied hard for the actor to be a man, but the producers and/or studio weren’t having it.
Agreed, particularly re: the idea of sacrifice and the set pieces. The plot may be contrived, but the emotions underpinning it are organic. (Okay, not so much for the David subplot, but still.)
