But what if they can get the required energy from solar,geothermal or even atmospheric sources; Actually in my humble opinion this development has a lot of merit. Just because we need combustible fuels to run our dear cars doesn't mean they are the only source of energy on this planet!

Maybe Mercs built for the Russian market have a cloak mode option instead of a sport mode; I imagine it'd be a lot more functional in such environs!
