Maybe she was worried that if she reported to child services and they didn't do anything, the guy would get more violent. It's not unheard of.

Maybe the Aunt or another relative who tried to get her to take the child to the hospital can get temporary custody. Maybe this woman can get probation, therapy and some parenting classes after her sentence. Then she can do supervised visits or something. Every once in while the system does work.
