I wouldn't say she's the worst, but she deserved the slap. And I think it helped wake her up and treat Nolan like a human being at last.

It was subtly hinted at in an earlier episode where Danny's asked if he has kids and instead of directly saying no, he skirts it by saying that he's not cut out to be a father

Over the course of 3 months

Someone should cut together a Season 1 DVD without the foreshadowing and voiceover scenes and end it at Episode 12 and see what the impact of that would be on viewers

I still think Titanic is a great romance/adventure film
