I played the first two games in the series, loved them. Only thing I wanted to add to it is giant monsters.

The source material does make a good open-world roaming RPG. Lots of people to save, dozens of locations to discover, and the 6 Southern Cross generals to hunt down.

I am not sure about their engine, but in Unity, changing character physics and hitbox is fairly easy. Most of the modern games have character swap in mind, for DLC character models. So as long as they use modern engine and kept scalability in mind, a patch should be easy.
