I am not sure about their engine, but in Unity, changing character physics and hitbox is fairly easy. Most of the modern games have character swap in mind, for DLC character models. So as long as they use modern engine and kept scalability in mind, a patch should be easy.

I would hope so. I loved my Wii U, got lots of Wii Remotes and accessories, able to host an 8-men Smash party by myself since even my 3DS works as a Smash controller on Wii U.

I am still holding hope for my Wii U controllers to be Switch compatible. I haven’t bought my Switch controllers because of that.
