If ever something were to create growth in local, domestic manufacturing of goods - this will be it.
Critically, you don’t just “build” chips. You need to design them, contract their design, or lease their design from a designer. That’s a whole can of worms.
This is the car equivalent of a new-in-box eMachines Celeron 266. I mean, it’s retro, rare and mint - but... why?
ATF is really just a dirt-common, low friction gear oil with detergent built into it.
1st - 3rd gen Prius deserve all the flack they’ve gotten. All of those are spongy and lousy to drive. Each was better than the last, but they’re all similar.
Arbag deployment is really simple. Is delta V above a defined threshold? Yes? Deploy airbags. No? Do not deploy airbags. Simple as that.
Ehhh that’s a bit of a false argument though. Retro computers are much simpler machines which can be easily understood — and even then, there are certain things which are just not obtainable. Need a replacement PLA chip for your Commodore 64? You better be able to find a working spare. Once the last working chips die…
Err, what? U-haul is ~6 minutes from me. They have a fleet of F-150s and Silverado 1500s and all of them are set up to tow. All of their trucks are linked via the U-Haul app - I can book one in the app and electronically unlock it with the app. I can pick it up 24/7/365. It’s downright trivial - but I suppose it…
You probably live in a city which was built with large vehicles in mind. A truck rules out about 1/3 of underground parking garages here (Vancouver), and 1/3 of street parking. Most buildings have designated “contractor parking” spaces because trying to park a fullsize pickup near them is often difficult. This is also…
Do you honestly believe that phones will have any ports at all in 5 years? 10 years?
No, I just rent one when I need one. Once or twice a year at most, $19.95/day and $0.50 / km at U-Haul. I get to choose “cargo van or pickup truck” depending on what I need to carry. My average truck bill is ~$200 / year. It makes so much more sense to drive something not-terrible and rent the utility I need, when I…
I’ll never understand this. Its like walking around carrying a suitcase everywhere you go, just in case you might need to move something.
You realize the connection is actually HDMI via USB right? How much longer do you really think the HDMI standard will stick around for? We've gone composite -> S-video -> component -> many iterations of HDMI already.
I disagree. I expect a car to last 15-20 years. There's a near zero chance that a phone in 5 years, let alone 15-20 will support the same protocols / apps / ports as today. I want a significant amount of future-proofing in any car I buy.
Get in on it! A good friend bought a Prius right in the middle of the "unintended acceleration" mess, and got it for almost $10k off. He could have sold the car for more than he bought it for, for the first two years of ownership.
1st: Toyota’s delay in entering the EV market should be expected.
Once transit is robust, it becomes the other way around. The poor have access to a really robust transit network, funded by those who choose to drive (rather than have to drive).
That’s Metro Vancouver in a nutshell. $1.63/L and a 23% parking tax. We have an amazing transit system, excellent road maintenance and huge EV/hybrid take-up.
Oh great! Something which weighs as much as a semi (that 1000L water tank means 1000 kg alone), piloted by seniors with regular driver’s licenses. Just what this world needs to have careening down the highway...
