I can’t with this they really missed the boat to change up the origin story of Doctor Strange. They could have still done a person of color I don’t understand why they thought that making it a white woman would make everything better. And I’m noticing that Marvel is having a real problem casting women of color this

You’re white aren’t you?

That argument might be compelling if they had race-bent Steven Strange to be Asian and the Ancient One to be a white. But reducing the net amount of Asian roles in your film to avoid racism is one of the dumbest things I've read this week.

I’m not saying it’s better to whitewash the part, but there would have been comparable amounts of Internet rage over using an Asian actor of nonChinese origin. A lot of people protested the Chinese actresses that were cast in Memoirs of a Geisha, and I’m sure they would have done the same here.

Yeah, that interview struck me as a prime example of why it’s smart to run your explanation by a publicist first. His tone and attitude made everything way worse.

I wish it would just occur to them that if they feel they have no choice but to cast a white person in this role, that maybe they should make a point of casting an Asian actor in one (or more!) of the other major roles in the movie. (I’m not familiar enough with Dr. Strange to know the names of the other characters,

Theres totally a win here. Pick a race thats neither white nor south east asian.

I’m probably halfway, chronologically, between you and the folks who were front & center with him being not too pleased. It’s not just about creative control; it’s also about money. If they didn’t credit him, and/or if they sampled without either licensing or getting an agreement with his publishing company & whoever

You're giving him too much credit. He's a racist piece of shit.

...and Biggie Smalls Warning.

Nice. In Russian art and literature it’s the same thing. Quoting “the greats” is how you show that you know your shit and respect your predecessors while also innovating. The “controversy” surrounding sampling in the US was simply racist.

Actually speaking of layers, I thought about Tricky when listening to some of the songs on Lemonade. And your comment reminded me of “Glory Box” which samples “Ike’s Rap II” just like Tricky’s “Hell Is Around The Corner.”#layers

Holy hell, there is something magical about Hayes’ version. Love Cara’s song and Portishead’s.

I just went through this with a friend who was talking about someone sampling the baseline from The Luniz “I Got Five On It.”

I thought I recognised those strings! Thanks!

This is why I disagree with people who put down sampling on principle. I love geeking out about “THE LAYERS.” All music’s got them, but some artists directly quote (and cite) their sources and others do not.

The Isaac Hayes version is amazing.

That song is a jammmm. Honestly, everything Burt Bacharach wrote is.

My favourite Yeah Yeah Yeahs song. “Hold Up” is my favourite from the album too.

That level of dedication and attention to all.. reminds me of Diana, Michael, Stevie, and George Clinton/Bootsy Collins. And James Brown, of course. And yet somehow, Queen Bey seems to be.. more. She is the modern black woman we need in entertainment who is bigger than the genre and whose moves shake the foundation
