I was hoping that the new Reminders app would be more useful in that once you left or arrived at your location, it would actually perform an action rather than just pop-up a notification.

There's an app called Lazy Text that allows you to connect to your iPhone like a website. You type in your text and it shows up on the phone. Then from there you can send it to where ever you want.
