I understand your point. My frustration is in this “golden age” people can create whatever kind of reality they want to for themselves surrounded by whatever kind of media they enjoy and remain ignorant to issues that truly do matter.

Let me say that again: What some are advocating is a system where journalists DICTATE to the people what they should know instead of the people deciding for themselves. That’s dangerous.

I meant that your opinion on inspiring copycats is no different from someone else’s opinion that might actually live in the area of a tragedy and want to know the details of what the hell is going on. Or know the details to potentially prevent similar situations from occurring in their own community, etc.

You actually can’t debate what the public needs based on whether subject matter would be deemed offensive or inspire copycats.

It’s not about what they want. It’s what they NEED.
